WHY DO WE START BUSINESSES + THRIVE OFF UNCERTAINTY?

WHAT IS IT ABOUT PERSONAL EXPERIENCES + THE STORIES THAT WE TELL OURSELVES THAT DRIVES US TO ACT, CHANGE PATHS + SEEL SUCCESS FROM THE UNKNOWN?_

At conception, The Barbican was never intended to be anything more than a housing estate.

Built in the wake of heavy bombing during world war two, the idea emerged from despair and destruction. Becoming a cultural icon organically and completely by accident.

A recent architectural tour was made all the more poignant in the company of Ukrainian friends. In the UK as refugees of russia's terrible war.

For they're in the thick of it right now.

It's hard to comprehend the possibilities when we're at the behest of things that are out of our control.

But situations evolve. Opportunities emerge. Change is inevitable. Better things are just around the corner.

From wars causing unimaginable misery, to deeply personal challenges in our lives, tragedy and adversity can be powerful catalysts for a new order.

THE STORIES THAT DRIVE US TO ACT

Moving countries, switching careers, launching new businesses are all fascinating reactions to our own personal circumstances.

Sometimes to pursue something positive, sometimes to escape something negative.

Physically and metaphorically, when we find ourselves somewhere new there's a period where we feel that anything's possible.

I'm increasingly interested in the "why" behind what causes some to settle and find peace in comfort. Whilst others seek reward from risk, and satisfaction from the unknown.

WELLBEING, WORK, AND THE SPIRIT OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP

In the context my own journey, I'm responding to the impact of six months of EMDR therapy. It's transformed the way I feel.

I sometimes take a moment just to remember how much.

Coming to Mallorca was about change. A new start and a better quality of life. Based partly on fact, partly on a story I told myself.

The result is joyous and I absolutely love it here. But it's not easier in the way I expected it would be.

Reality, as it inevitably does, has well and truly kicked in. But I wouldn't change it for the world.

When opportunities arise, some of us are compelled to seize them. We do so for our own very personal reasons.

We use our heads for parts of this, and our hearts for others. This is in our nature. As humans, and as entrepreneurs.

I've been speaking to a lot of people this year who are embarking on their own journeys into the world of hospitality.

Unanimously led by passion and motivated by the potential upside. Often enthusiastically oblivious to the pitfalls and challenges.

So based on these conversations, and along with some personal learnings from Thumbprint, I sat down to gather some thoughts that I hope any new hospitality entrepreneur will find useful. This is below.

Whatever we've endured, and whatever the reasons we cite for making change in our lives and embarking on something new, it's only with the support of good people that we'll reach the place we want to go.

And it's a privilege, that during the course of my work, I have the chance to help people get there.
